Minimal Live Video Wallpaper for Windows with mpv

Full-featured wallpaper applications often include tray services, overlays, and additional background processes. bloatfree-live-video-wallpaper takes a minimal approach: mpv renders a looping video behind desktop icons, without an always-on wallpaper suite.

Compared with heavier wallpaper stacks, this architecture can reduce unnecessary GPU and process overhead. Results depend on resolution, frame rate, and the previous setup. The design priority is clear: hardware-decoded video, a small orchestrator, and no extra service layer.

CPU usage is typically near idle when mpv uses GPU decode (NVDEC / DXVA2). Memory use is commonly 30–60 MB, depending on video resolution.

Setup

1. Install dependencies: pip install pywin32
2. Download a 64-bit mpv build, extract mpv.exe, and add it to PATH — or set MPV_PATH in wallpaper.py
3. Run:

python wallpaper.py "C:\path\to\your\video.mp4"

Stop with Ctrl+C in the terminal.

Start on login

python wallpaper.py "C:\path\to\your\video.mp4" --setup

Remove the Task Scheduler entry with python wallpaper.py --remove.

Notes

• Audio is muted by default; pass --audio if sound is required
• Prefer H.264 / H.265 MP4 or VP9 WebM; H.264 usually has the broadest hardware decode support
• The wallpaper renders behind icons (similar layering to Wallpaper Engine)
• If icons disappear once after launch, right-click the desktop and select Refresh
• After docking or undocking a display, restart the script so resolution updates correctly
