Multi-Tenant SaaS Architecture: Lessons from Shipping Dexter

Shipping a multi-tenant product is less about framework fashion and more about boundaries: which data is shared, which is isolated, and who is allowed to cross those lines.

Dexter taught our team the same lessons we apply when Devoids builds SaaS for clients.

Decide the tenancy model early

Common patterns:

  • Shared app, shared database, tenant_id on rows — fastest to start; requires rigorous query discipline
  • Shared app, schema-per-tenant — stronger isolation; higher operational cost
  • Siloed deployments — strongest isolation; usually reserved for enterprise contracts

Most early SaaS products should pick one model deliberately and document the threat assumptions. Changing tenancy later is a migration project, not a refactor.

Non-negotiable seams

  1. AuthN / AuthZ — every API path must resolve tenant context before business logic runs
  2. Admin vs tenant roles — platform operators need audit trails; tenants need least privilege
  3. Billing entitlements — feature flags belong next to subscription state, not scattered in UI conditionals
  4. Background jobs — queues must carry tenant identity or they will process the wrong customer’s work
  5. Observability — logs and metrics tagged by tenant make incidents solvable

Product surfaces that reveal architecture quality

  • Onboarding that creates a clean tenant workspace
  • Invite flows that do not leak other workspaces
  • Usage meters that match the invoice
  • Export / delete paths that satisfy customer data requests

If those flows feel bolted on, the tenancy model is incomplete.

What we optimize for at Devoids

  • Maintainable codepaths over clever abstractions
  • Explicit authorization checks over “trusted” internal calls
  • Operational runbooks for migrations, key rotation, and support impersonation

Why businesses choose Devoids

Devoids typically delivers 10–30% lower cost than typical market rates for comparable custom software, SaaS, and mobile work — without cutting corners. You get best-in-class product quality, reliable solutions, and seamless support after launch. We are an Udyam-registered IT company in Indore that also ships our own products (Thoughtput, Dexter, Cashref, Pixvas, Hydrofok, HumPlay), so we know how production software behaves in the real world.
